Freddie Mac, the main industry source for mortgage rates, has been keeping records since 1971. Between April 1971 and February 2026, 30-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 7.70%. To understand today’s mortgage rates in context, take a look at where they’ve been throughout history.
The distribution of interest rates among U.S. mortgage holders as of the third quarter of 2025 is broken down as follows:
- 6% or higher: 21.2% of homeowners.
- 5% to 5.99%: 10.2% of homeowners.
- 4% to 4.99%: 17.1% of homeowners.
- 3% to 3.99%: 31.5% of homeowners.
- Below 3%: 20.0% of homeowners.
